Hearst Castle Weekend

Jan 17 2009 // Comments

The wife and I hopped in N6763N and headed up the coast to San Luis Obispo, California (SBP), with the goal of spending the weekend relaxing and visiting Hearst Castle. Check out the pics we grabbed while at the castle. What a place, wouldn't mind having a vacation place on the hill like that... Apparently, back in the day, the owner owned a DC3 and built an airstrip on the property to fly the supplies in and out of the castle. The airstrip was also used by the guests that had airplanes. Many hollywood stars stayed in the castle over the years. It was just a place to relax and party it up with friends.

San Luis Obispo is a great fly-in location. They have a rental car facility onsite, and overnight parking is cheap. The airport has self-serve fuel, so you can save a little dough if you pump yourself. The approach was easy as pie -- we called up tower from about 15 miles south of the field, and they immediately cleared us for a straight-in runway 29'r. Once on the ground we taxi'd over to top off the tanks and then to the overnight parking. The overnight parking is behind the tower, be sure to ask ground control you need the overnight parking or they'll direct you to the short-term parking in front of the restaurant.

We can't wait to go back -- was a great weekend and will visit again real soon.

~cheers~
